Description

Dr John McGregor taught for more than 30 years as an Open University tutor and in further education. He is a Trustee of the Glenfinnan Station Museum and has served on Linlithgow Civic Trust since 2008.

This books attempts to repay a dozen happy and fulfilling years in Linlithgow by adding to the several specialist local histories already in print, but in no way does it challenge their authors, who are all more deeply grounded in the community. The railway politics of 19th century Scotland have been John’s particular subject – and this is not without local relevance. The amalgamation of the Edinburgh & Glasgow Company with the North British in 1865 went far to define Scotland’s subsequent railway development. The book also exemplifies a theme which John’s students would recognise – railway records, not excluding the sombre reports of accidents, are a valuable and underexploited source for social and economic history. Though shale mining and refining has already found its historian, the book also touches on the extensive industrial, railway-related, remains on either side of the town; it includes a specially drawn map to guide the explorer to what may still be discovered around Causewayend.
